Before I left home I uploaded photos of my show quilt, inspired by the theme for this years Scottish Quilt Championships in September which is Celtic Inspirations I started this quilt with my own design and drawings way back in January and have been working on it between customer quilts ever since, it's been off and on the frame numerous times it seems. Lots of design work on paper, then marking the quilt. The only place I could lay out fabric for a quilt this size is up in my loft where I had to be careful not to get other marks on the fabric and it was SO cold back then.
I started the quilting with the border and lyrics which are the first verse of 'The Flower of Scotland', the unofficial Scottish Anthem, there isn't an official Scottish anthem...
O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen.
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's army,
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.
The Circles were next...a bit tricky but eventually I got them done, then the flutes of the thistle and the spiky leaves, then all the fills...
It's white cotton sateen with a green mottled backing fabric, lilac binding with green piping.
Cotton batting with a layer of wool on top, I used MagnaGlide bobbins with White Glide thread with Green Superior Metallic around the leaves, the quilt measures 75 x 79 inches approximately.
I painted the details with Inktense Pencils and added a few Lilac and green crystals to add a bit of sparkle.
Here it is 'Inner Circle, Flower of Scotland'

Wow!!!! Kay that is stunning! And although I'm not a full blood Scot, this quilt totally speaks to my heart. All the best for Festival.
ReplyDeleteI love this piece Kay; you did an absolutely beautiful job. Would love to see this at one of the MQX shows next year.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful piece! Amazing what you can accomplish in pockets of time!
ReplyDeleteWow! this is gorgeous! I watched your derwent/aloe video and want to try this technique out again.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness Kay! It is absolutely stunning! How creative and unique. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a winner. You have a great artists eye.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your show and I hope you have lots of visitors to your booth.
IMPRESSIVE!!!!! Isn't the Ink tense pencil and gel a fun way to add colour....love playing with it. Gotta say that I think I'd be terrified to do it on such a large piece with all those hours of thread work.....you are a brave gal. :-)
ReplyDeleteKay, you've done it again. This is stunning! You are tempting me to dump my customers and start being artistically creative.
ReplyDeleteOH MY WORD!! This is a stunning quilt!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I watched your video as you "coloured" this quilt, and how gorgeous it turned out! Extra special with it's by your hand from conception to the finished quilt. I really love just how precise you are with your quilting. Awesome work!
ReplyDeleteThat quilt is so beautiful, I wish that I could see it.

Kay, I have enjoyed seeing your process with the Inktense pencils. I am working on a idea of some wall hangings and was interested in doing some color work. I will be adding these to my shopping list! Hoping to spend a few days in Houston this fall. You work gets me excited to hit the long arm room!
ReplyDeleteI saw a close up of your Flower of Scotland quilt in my equilter newsletter and thought, you know, that looks like Kay's quilting, and I was right!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is absolutely stunning, as always!!
I've always wanted to try the coloring in after quilting technique but have been terrified I would color outside the lines or it would bleed. I may have to play with those pencils a bit.
Oh wow!
